About Jez

Inspired by the musicianship of influential guitarists during the 1980s 'New Wave of British Heavy Metal', Jez was captivated by the expressive nature and versatility of the guitar, and by the age of 17 was gaining valuable experience playing lead and rhythm guitar on the live circuit. Progressing to blues and acoustic in the 1990s and developing a flair for songwriting and music production in the Noughties, Jez achieved semi-final placing in the UK Songwriting Competition on three consecutive years, and in 2010 secured a single-song publishing deal with recognised Record Producer Steve Jervier who previously achieved a UK No.1 record with Take That (Pray).

In 2011, Jez started a long-term collaboration with accomplished UK Artist/Songwriter/Producer Jorden Milnes, achieving a single-song publishing deal in 2015 with South Korean trio ‘Funky Galaxy’, a sub-unit of the popular boy band Choshinsei (Supernova). Further success followed with a string of collaboration releases through BMG Production Music and Score Production Music, with notable sync credits on Home and Away (Severn Network, Australia), the One Show (BBC1), Countryfile (BBC1) and A Martha's Vineyard Mysteries 'Poisoned in Paradise' (Hallmark Movies Channel).

During this period, Jez maintained his passion for performance, supporting studio sessions for Jorden’s clients and providing accompaniment for upcoming vocalists, including a successful X-Factor audition and live TV.

More recently, Jez has sought to further improve his performance techniques with the guidance of professional UK Guitarist/Producer Tom Platts.

FAQs

FAQs

“Why would I want to use a session guitarist?”

With the latest advancements in Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) technology, many musicians, songwriters and producers are embellishing their music using authentic-sounding guitar samples and loops. In those instances when the guitar parts are driving the mix, an experienced and skilled session guitarist can bring their uniqueness, versatility, and dynamic creativity, adding an organic personal dimension to your music.

“What are the advantages of working online?”

By using an online session guitarist, you will benefit from a cost-effective and flexible service, unconstrained by geographical location.

“What range of clients would normally use an online session guitarist?”

Clients would typically include vocalists, songwriters and producers, some of them just starting out on their musical journey, and others already established in the business.

“What foundations do you consider essential?”

  • The most important aspect for me is the building of trust with clients through clear communication, consistency of quality, and total commitment.

  • I think it a great advantage to have a solid understanding of music theory as it enables an accurate translation of client requirements and promotes a colourful depth of creative expression.

  • At a practical level, a broad and proven technical background in both live and studio performance will give clients access to a wide range of playing styles and techniques.

  • When recording or mixing guitar parts, being able to confidently navigate DAW functionality is vital to maximise the range of guitar sounds appropriate to the song being recorded.

“How do you record a guitar part for a client?”

The first activity is to understand client requirements, usually via an audio/video call, and then request a file transfer of the backing track or relevant stems from the client. Once I have written and recorded the necessary guitar tracks on Logic Pro, a rough mix of the completed song is sent to the client for review, and if further tweaks are requested, I will re-record the necessary tracks before transferring the final dry/wet audio files to the client.

“How do you achieve your individual guitar sounds?”

I have three main guitars which cater for the diverse range of genres I record, a Schecter Diamond Series PT, a 1990 Fender Stratocaster, and an Ibanez AEW51-NT1202 electro acoustic. Depending on client requirements, I also use off-the-shelf plug-ins to achieve the most suitable sound for the genre in question. Finally, I the rely on the variety of playing techniques I have learnt over the years, and always aim to blend in my individuality.
